In Namibia, only a small portion of the population reaches the WHO-recommended amount of daily fruit and vegetable consumption. One in six people is affected by food insecurity.
In our research project “Aquaponic Mobile Transfer” (Aquaponic), tutor/producer duos were trained using the Training of Trainers (ToT) approach to establish aquaponic do-it-yourself production units and associated business models. This approach helps close the gap in access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
Together with research partners TERRA URBANA, the Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ), in close collaboration with local partners Eden Greenfields and Namtonmanor, and with funding from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK), a hybrid and transferable training approach was developed and tested using various digital media, direct exchange, and self-learning elements.
We thank all partners for their excellent and successful collaboration and look forward to the emergence of further hydro- or aquaponic systems and business models.
